Culture is more than food, fashion or celebration. It is the stories we inherit, the traditions we carry and the experiences that shape who we are.
Culture Connect is a community-led cultural initiative created to bring people together through heritage, creativity, storytelling and shared experiences.
Led by Victoria Mponda and working alongside Project COFFE, Culture Connect creates opportunities for people, particularly Black and Global Majority communities, to explore identity, celebrate culture and build meaningful connections.
Creating space for our stories
Many people grow up knowing very little about their family history, cultural heritage or the stories that came before them.
Migration, displacement, discrimination and changing family structures can create distance between generations. Important memories, traditions and experiences may be lost when people are not given space to record and share them.
Culture Connect creates welcoming spaces where these stories can be explored, respected and celebrated.
What Culture Connect explores
Through creative activities, workshops and community events, Culture Connect explores:
- Identity and belonging
- Family and community history
- Black and Global Majority heritage
- Migration and lived experience
- Art, fashion, textiles and cultural symbols
- Storytelling, poetry and spoken word
- Music, food and community traditions
- The legacies we want to leave for future generations
Each activity encourages people to learn from one another while recognising that every cultural journey is different.
Creativity as cultural connection
Art and storytelling can make culture and history feel personal.
A photograph, piece of fabric, family saying, song or treasured object can hold generations of meaning. Creative activities allow people to explore these connections in ways that feel accessible and relevant.
Culture Connect uses creativity to encourage conversation, strengthen confidence and help people feel proud of their identity.
Bringing generations together
Cultural knowledge is often passed from one generation to the next through stories, traditions and everyday experiences.
Culture Connect creates opportunities for younger and older community members to share knowledge, ask questions and learn together.
These conversations can help preserve important stories while building stronger relationships between families and communities.
Visibility, ownership and belonging
Culture Connect gives people the opportunity to tell their own stories rather than allowing others to define their identity or experiences.
By celebrating heritage and encouraging creative expression, the initiative aims to build confidence, increase cultural visibility and strengthen community connections.
